Male Infertility: More Common Than You Think

Approximately 15% of couples are unable to conceive after one year of unprotected intercourse. A male factor is solely responsible in about 20% of infertile couples and contributory in another 30–40%. If a male infertility factor is present, it is almost always defined by the finding of an abnormal semen analysis, although other male factors may play a role even when the semen analysis is normal.

My name is Jared Moss. I’m a urologist at LSU-Health Shreveport/Ochsner Urology, but I also specialize in male fertility.

When I got into specializing in urology, I realized that so many of my personal friends were struggling with urological problems yet suffered in silence. They don’t talk about it a lot, which puts an unnecessary burden on them emotionally and physically.

As people become increasingly aware of everyday couples struggling with fertility as the average age of starting families gets older, I hope they will get more comfortable talking about it and seeking medical support.

Fortunately, if we get patients to be evaluated early, there are many treatment options available and we can get that couple back on track to have a natural pregnancy.
